Decompression alone or decompression with fusion for lumbar spinal stenosis: five-year clinical results from a randomized clinical trial.
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2024;12(20):7 Bone Joint J. 2024 Jul 1;106-B(7):705-712.What this means for my practice?
There was no difference in the five-year Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) of patients with lumbar spinal stenosis who underwent decompression alone or decompression with fusion, with or without DS. This is consistent with previous literature.
Study Summary
358 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis were randomized to receive decompression alone (n=124) or decompression with fusion (n=123). The primary outcome of interest was the Oswestry disability index (ODI). Secondary outcomes of interest included EuroQol five-dimension health questionnaire (EQ-5D), visual analog scales for leg and back pain (VAS), and four global assessment questions. Outcomes were assessed at the 5-year follow-up post-surgery. There was no significant difference in the primary outcome of interest. There was no significant difference in any of the secondary outcome of interest except EQ-5D. Patient-reported improvement in EQ-5D wasn't reflected in the VAS scores.
