Local Ketorolac Injection vs Popliteal Sciatic Nerve Blockade as an Adjuvant to a Spinal Block in Hindfoot Arthrodesis

Eighty patients scheduled for an ankle/hindfoot arthrodesis procedure were randomized to receive a spinal nerve block plus a popliteal nerve block (n=40) or local ketorolac infiltration (n=40). Outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) up to 48 hours post-operation, time to incision, operative time, morphine consumption, length of hospital stay, and the incidence of complications. Results revealed significantly lower VAS pain scores at 24 and 48 hours in the ketorolac group compared to the popliteal group (p<0.05 for all). Moreover, the time to incision was significantly shorter in the ketorolac group (p<0.001). No significant differences were observed between the two groups in the remaining outcomes (p>0.05 for all).
