Interscalene nerve block with plain bupivacaine versus liposomal bupivacaine for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: A randomized controlled trial.

Forty-one patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) were randomized to receive an interscalene block with liposomal bupivacaine (LB) (n=18) or plain bupivacaine (PB) (n=23). The primary outcome was worst VAS pain with movement on postoperative day (POD) 2. Secondary outcomes included pain scores (rest/movement) and opioid use (MME) in PACU and on POD 1, 3, and 7, plus adverse events; outcomes were assessed through POD 7. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant between-group differences for the primary endpoint (adjusted P=0.55) or for averaged POD1–3 pain at rest and with movement, nor for opioid consumption POD1–3, with daily measures similarly nonsignificant. In short, LB did not improve pain or reduce opioids versus PB in ARCR through 7 days.
