Liposomal bupivacaine infiltration in the surgical site for analgesia after rotator cuff repair: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial
J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2021 May;30(5): 986-993.58 patients undergoing an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were randomized to receive an infiltration surgical site injection of liposomal bupivacaine (n=27) or normal saline (n=27) for post-operative pain control. Outcomes of interest included numeric rating scale (NRS) pain scores after nerve block resolution and in the first 3 post-operative days, opioid consumption in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) and in the first 3 post-operative days, NRS pain scores during pendulum swing, patient satisfaction, and the incidence of adverse events. With the exception of pain scores on post-operative day 3, which was significantly lower in the bupivacaine group (p=0.003), all outcomes were not significantly different between the two groups (p>0.05 for all).
