Local anaesthesia versus intravenous regional anaesthesia in endoscopic carpal tunnel release: a randomized controlled trial

Epub 2012 Jul 340 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were randomized to evaluate the differences in pain management in endoscopic carpal tunnel release with either local anaesthesia (LIA) or intravenous regional anaesthesia (IVRA). Pain scores were measured on a visual analog scale perioperatively up to 24 hours following surgery. Results indicated that pain was significantly lower with local anaesthesia immediately after surgery and at 2 hours postoperatively. At 2 hours postoperatively, no patient who received local anaesthesia required additional analgesics, compared to 8 in the IVRA group.
