A prospective, ranomised study comparing two techniques of autologous chondrocyte implantation for osteochondral defects in the knee: Periosteum covered versus type I/III collagen covered

68 patients with symptomatic articular cartilage defects in the knee were randomized to receive autologous chondrocyte implantation with a periosteal cover (ACI-P) or a type I/III collagen membrane (ACI-C). After a follow up period of 24 months, there was no significant difference in clinical outcome between the two groups. However, a significant amount of the ACI-P patients required shaving of a hypertrophied graft after 1 year, compared to none in the ACI-C group. Overall, the results of the study determined that the effectiveness of a type I/III collagen membrane is comparable to a periosteal cover in promoting hyaline cartilage repair.
