Seventy-two patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a semirigid extension brace (n=35) or no intervention (n=36). Outcomes of interest were range of motion (ROM), Knee Society Score (KSS) and Functional KSS, pain scores using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and opioid consumption measured 1 day, 9 days, 1 month, and 1 year after surgery. The brace group showed significantly better outcomes for knee function (KSS) at 30 days. Range of motion was also significantly better in the brace group at day 30 and 1 year and better ROM in the control group at 9 days.
