The Effect of Intravenous Tranexamic Acid on Perioperative Blood Loss, Transfusion Requirements, Verticalization, and Ambulation in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Double-Blind Study.
Medicina (Kaunas) . 2024 Jul 21;60(7):1183.Ninety-six patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) at two time points (n=48) or a placebo of 0.9% saline solution (n=48). The primary outcome was perioperative blood loss. Secondary outcomes included transfusion requirements, time to verticalization, and time to ambulation. Outcomes were assessed up to postoperative day 19. Overall, the results revealed that TXA significantly reduced perioperative blood loss, decreased the need for transfusion, and facilitated earlier verticalization and ambulation. These findings suggest that TXA is an effective intervention for minimizing blood loss, reducing transfusion rates, and enhancing postoperative recovery in TKA patients.
