Eighty-eight patients undergoing surgery for a periarticular ankle fracture were randomized to receive either a combination of mannitol, infrared irradiation and kinesiology tape (n=44) or mannitol alone (n=44), post-operatively. Outcomes of interest were postoperative swelling measured via the cross-sectional diameter, pain using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and patient satisfaction. Swelling and pain were measured at three, five, and seven days postoperatively, whereas satisfaction was measured at 7 days. The combination group presented significantly better swelling and pain at five and seven days with better patient satisfaction at 7 days. Swelling was significantly better in the control group at 3 days.
