Increased activation of indirect semantic associations under psilocybin

The result that psilocybin increases indirect semantic priming contributes to the general understanding of the effects of hallucinogenic agents on cognitive functions. The finding in this study suggests that psilocybin can increase the availability of remote associations and bring cognitive contents to mind that would otherwise be non-activated. However, due to decreased psychological performance in general under psilocybin, the increased indirect priming effect could be due to a decreased capacity to use relevant information for focusing on semantic processing. The results in this study show the effect of psilocybin on the spread of activation during lexical access. The results are limited by the small sample size.

Eight healthy subjects underwent a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to test the effects of psilocybin on semantic and indirect semantic priming. The subjects randomly received 0.2 mg/kg of psilocybin or placebo on two days at least one week apart and then completed a lexical decision task. Psilocybin increased indirect semantic priming in the normal subjects.
