Isokinetic knee muscle strength comparison after enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) versus conventional setup in total knee arthroplasty (TKA): a single blinded prospective randomized study.

52 patients with knee osteoarthritis scheduled for a cemented, navigated total knee arthroplasty were scheduled to receive an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS; n=30) protocol or a conventional care protocol (n=22) for peri-operative management. The outcomes of interest included peak torque, work, and power measured during knee flexion and extension at 60 and 180 degrees per second. Outcomes were measured at 5 days and 4 weeks post-operation. The results revealed significantly better torque, work, and power during 180degs of knee flexion in the ERAS group at 5 days post-operation, compared to the conventional group. Whilst the other outcomes were not statistically significant, outcomes trended in favour of the ERAS group. Range of motion was also significantly better in the ERAS group at 5 days post-operation (p=0.038).
