The effects of isolated hip abductor and external rotator muscle strengthening on pain, health status, and hip strength in females with patellofemoral pain: a randomized controlled trial
J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2012 Jan;42(1):22-9. Epub 2011 Oct 2528 females suffering from patellofemoral pain (PFP) syndrome were randomized to either an exercise strength training program of the hip abductors and external rotators, or to a control group not receiving exercise training. Following the 8 week training period, the exercise group demonstrated significant reductions in visual analogue scale pain, while exhibiting increases in both Western Ontario and McMaster Universities health status scores and hip strength and rotation. These results were maintained at the 6 month follow-up period. The control group did not exhibit any improvements in the outcome measures.
