The effect of guided imagery applied on geriatric orthopaedic patients on preoperative anxiety and comfort.
ANZ J Surg . 2023 May;93(5):1207-1213.Eighty geriatric orthopaedic patients were randomized to receive either guided imagery (n=40) or no intervention (n=40). The primary outcomes were preoperative anxiety levels and comfort, assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the General Comfort Scale. Outcomes were measured before and after the intervention. Overall, the results revealed that guided imagery significantly reduced anxiety (P<0.05) and improved comfort (P<0.05) in the experimental group compared to the control group. The findings suggest that guided imagery is an effective, low-cost method for improving psychological well-being in geriatric patients undergoing surgery.
