A Comparison Between Fondaparinux Sodium and Low-Molecular-Weight Heparin in Preventing Patients Undergoing Hip Replacement from Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Fondaparinux sodium demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing the risk of postoperative deep vein thrombosis and related complications compared to low-molecular-weight heparin in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Clinicians should consider fondaparinux sodium as a potentially more effective alternative for DVT prophylaxis in this patient population. However, the study's limitation lies in the lack of measurement of coagulation-related laboratory indicators, which may have provided a more comprehensive evaluation of the anticoagulant effects.

Sixty patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either fondaparinux sodium (n=30) or low-molecular-weight heparin (n=30). Outcomes of interest included the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after surgery, Wells scores, subcutaneous ecchymosis, swelling circumference, and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain scores. Outcomes were assessed at 3, 5, and 7 days postoperatively. Overall, the results of the study revealed that fondaparinux sodium was more effective than low-molecular-weight heparin in reducing the incidence of DVT, subcutaneous ecchymosis, and swelling circumference by the seventh day after surgery. The findings suggest that fondaparinux sodium may be a superior option for preventing postoperative DVT in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.
