Pain Res Manag. 2022 Mar 19;2022: 8704569.12 randomized controlled trial with a total of 660 patients undergoing an upper extremity surgery under a brachial plexus block were included in this meta-analysis comparing adjuvant fentanyl to placebo/no added intervention. The outcomes of interest included onset and duration of anesthesia, post-operative pain and analgesic consumption, and complications. Pooled results revealed significantly quicker onset of motor anesthesia, as well as and prolonged sensory and motor anesthesia with adjuvant fentanyl. However, the odds of complications were significantly higher with adjuvant fentanyl. Due to heterogeneous and limited reporting, post-operative analgesia outcomes could not be quantitatively analyzed.
