Femoral vs sciatic nerve block to provide analgesia after medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy in the setting of multimodal analgesia: A randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial.
J Clin Anesth . 2024 May:93:111355.Fifty patients undergoing medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy were randomized to receive either a femoral nerve block (n=24) or a sciatic nerve block (n=22). The primary outcome of interest was intravenous morphine consumption at 24 hours postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included rest and dynamic pain scores at 2, 24, and 48 hours postoperatively, as well as functional outcomes at 6 months. Overall, the study revealed no significant difference in morphine consumption at 24 hours between the femoral and sciatic nerve block groups (p=0.98). Additionally, there were no significant differences in secondary outcomes, including pain scores and functional outcomes, at 6 months. The findings suggest that there is no superiority of the femoral nerve block over the sciatic nerve block in providing postoperative analgesia in this setting.
