Is femoral nerve block necessary during total knee arthroplasty?: A randomized controlled trial

Epub 2012 May 3155 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were included in a blinded randomized control trial conducted to compare the use of femoral nerve block versus no block as an adjunct to a local anesthetic for perioperative analgesia. The trial compared systemic narcotic uses, self-reported pain, and functional outcomes at 1 year. The Knee Society score was significantly higher and the fentanyl consumption in the first 24 hours was significantly lower in the femoral nerve block group.
