Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy as an Adjunctive Therapy for Frozen Shoulder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

This study suggests that the addition of extracorporeal shock wave therapy to routine therapy can significantly improve pain and function in the first 3 months. However, due to high heterogeneity and a lack of studies, whether this benefit continues beyond 3 months is unclear. This study was limited by the overlap in time-points and limited number of studies.

20 studies with a total of 1360 patients with frozen shoulder were included in this meta-analysis assessing the efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy as an adjunct to routine treatment vs. routine treatment alone. The outcomes of interest included pain (Visual Analog Scale), function (Constant-Murley Score), and external rotation range of motion. Results revealed that adjunctive extracorporeal shockwave therapy resulted in significantly less pain and better function in the first 3 months of follow-up. Due to significant heterogeneity and a lack of studies, efficacy beyond 3 months was unable to be assessed adequately.
