Erector spinae plane block vs. peri-articular injection for pain control after arthroscopic shoulder surgery: a randomised controlled trial
Anaesthesia. 2022 Mar;77(3):301-310.Sixty two patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery were randomized to receive a preoperative T2 erector spinae block (n=31) or a peri-articular injection at the end of surgery (n=31). The primary outcome of interest was resting pain in the recovery room. Secondary outcomes of interest included pain scores with movement, opioid use, patient satisfaction and adverse effects. There were no significant differences between resting or movement pain scores at any time point between groups. The erector spinae plane block group had significantly higher opioid consumption in the immediate postoperative period. Adverse effects, patient satisfaction, pain scores and opioid consumption at 24h were similar between groups.
