Epidural versus intra-articular infusion analgesia following total knee replacement
J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong). 2015 Dec;23(3):287-975 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive either epidural or intraarticular infusion of analgesia for 48 hours postoperatively at 5ml/hour. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the efficacy of these analgesic techniques in terms of VAS pain scores and complications at 48 hours postoperatively. The results displayed no significant differences between groups in pain scores up to 48 hours postoperatively. However, the patients receiving epidural infusion displayed higher incidences of hypotension and paraesthesia of the lower limb, and a longer time to stand/walk.
