Radial Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Enhances Graft Maturation at 2-Year Follow-up After ACL Reconstruction: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

30 patients who underwent an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction were randomized to receive rehabilitation plus weekly radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT; n=15) or rehabilitation alone (n=15). Outcomes of interest included Lysholm score, the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Tegner scores, anterior tibial translation, and graft maturation as measured by the signal-to-noise quotient on MRI. Patients who received ESWT reported significantly greater graft maturation and superior clinical function scores (Tegner; Lysholm) vs. the rehabilitation-only group at 24 months.
