2014 15th EFORT Congress: Significance of P1NP values in assessment of fracture healing of surgically fixed tibial diapyseal fractures treated with strontium ranelate vs placebo: a randomised double blind controlled trial

69 patients with a surgically fixed closed diaphyseal tibial fracture were randomized to receive either strontium ranelate or a placebo. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of strontium ranelate on fracture healing and levels of procollagen N-terminal nucleopeptide (PINP). Results indicated a significant improvement in PINP levels from baseline to 90 days within the strontium ranelate group, although there was no between-group difference at 90 days. Overall rate of fracture healing was significantly higher in the strontium ranelate group compared to the placebo group.
