A comparison of knee braces during walking for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the medial compartment of the knee
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2005 Jul;87(7):937-912 patients were mild to severe medial compartment knee osteoarthritis were included in the crossover randomized trial and randomized to the order in which they received two different braces: a valgus brace, or a simple hinged brace. Prior to intervention with either brace, patients were assessed under a non-brace condition. Gait analysis and kinetic analysis were undertaken after 6 months of brace wear. Results demonstrated that, while both braces had a significant effect on peak vertical propulsion relative to the non-brace condition, only the valgus brace had a significant effect on peak vertical loading. Additionally, only the valgus brace had a significant effect on clinical outcome measures of pain and function relative to non-brace use.
