The efficacy and safety of bisphosphonate analogs for treatment of osteoporosis after spinal cord injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Nine randomized controlled trials containing 406 patients with osteoporosis after spinal cord injury were included in this meta-analysis comparing bisphosphonate analogs (n=104) to control (n=102) for the prevention of bone density loss. The primary outcome of interest was the change in bone mineral density (BMD) of the total hip, distal femur, and lumbar spinal regions. Results revealed a significantly greater increase in BMD of the total hip and lumbar spine in the bisphosphonate group compared to the control group (p<0.05 for both). The change in BMD of the distal femur was not significantly different between the two groups.
