Randomized Trial of Static and Articulating Spacers for Treatment of the Infected Total Hip Arthroplasty
J Arthroplasty. 2021 Jun;36(6): 2171-2177.Fifty two patients with a chronic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a static (n=23) or articulating (n=29) spacer as the first stage of a two stage revision. The primary outcome of interest was operative time of the second-stage reimplantation surgery. Secondary outcomes of interest included length of stay, location of discharge, functional outcomes and failure of treatment. There was no significant difference in operative time at the second-stage reimplantation operation. The articulating spacer group had significantly shorter length of stay after both the 1st and 2nd stage operations. There was no difference in functional outcomes, location of discharge or failure of treatment between the two groups.
