Effectiveness of community pharmacist-led interventions in osteoarthritis pain management: A cluster-randomized trial.

One hundred fifty-eight adults with osteoarthritis and poor disease knowledge were cluster-randomized to receive either a pharmacist-led educational and medication review intervention (n=78) or usual care (n=80). The intervention involved individualized counselling, a video and leaflet on osteoarthritis management, and weekly follow-ups for six weeks. Outcomes were measured at 3 and 6 months. These included pain (numeric rating scale), knowledge (customized questionnaire), physical function (WOMAC), depression (PROMIS), and quality of life (EQ-5D). Overall, the results of the study revealed that the intervention group had significantly improved pain and knowledge scores at both time points, but no significant differences were seen in functional ability, depression, or quality of life. These findings suggest that pharmacist-led interventions can enhance knowledge and modestly reduce pain in osteoarthritis patients, though broader functional benefits were not observed within 6 months.
