Cell Therapy With Autologous Bone Marrow Cells for Plate-Stabilized Proximal Humerus Fractures .
Cell-Based Therapy by Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Mononuclear Cells for Bone Augmentation of Plate-Stabilized Proximal Humeral Fractures: A Multicentric, Randomized, Open Phase IIa study.
Stem Cells Transl Med . 2024 Jan 12;13(1):3-13.Ninety four patients with proximal humerus fractures were randomized to receive either autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMC) on a β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffold (n=47) or β-TCP scaffold alone (n=47) during surgical fixation with an angular stable plate. Outcomes were evaluated over 12 weeks. The study assessed radiographic healing and functional shoulder recovery (DASH score). Overall, the results revealed no statistically significant difference between groups in secondary dislocation rates or functional outcomes. The therapy was well tolerated without serious adverse events, suggesting good safety but no added benefit in short-term healing outcomes with the addition of BMC.
