In patients undergoing primary TKA, the sequential administration of oral TXA following IV TXA administration does not reduce blood loss.
Study Summary
One hundred and forty one patients undergoing primary TKA were randomized to receive perioperative intravenous tranexamic acid (IV-TXA) alone (n=48), IV TXA followed by oral TXA for 2 days (2D, n=46) or oral TXA for 5 days (5D, n=47). The primary outcome of interest were maximal drops in hemoglobin, estimated blood loss, transfusion rates and complications. There was no significant differences in hemoglobin drops, estimated blood loss, transfusion rates or postoperative complications.
