Effect of Psilocybin on Empathy and Moral Decision-Making
Int J Neuropsychopharmacol. 2017 11-Apr;():. 10.1093/ijnp/pyx047A within-patient, randomized controlled study of 33 patients was conducted comparing psilocybin to placebo on outcomes of empathy and moral decision making. Participants were evaluated on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), Multifaceted Empathy Test (MET), Moral Dilemma Task (MDT), Altered States of Consciousness Rating Scale (5D-ASC), and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). It was found that psilocybin significantly increased emotional, but not cognitive empathy when compared to placebo. Moral decision-making remained unchanged in psilocybin compared to placebo sessions.
