Effect of physical therapy interventions in individuals with primary thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Nineteen studies including 1,477 patients with primary thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing physical therapy interventions versus conservative controls. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain, hand function, grip strength, and pinch strength. Orthosis interventions significantly improved pain, grip strength, and pinch strength, but not hand function. Neoprene and thermoplastic orthoses showed no difference in outcomes. The findings suggest orthoses are effective in improving pain and strength but not hand function, regardless of the orthosis type or design.
