Eleven randomized controlled trials including 402 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction or repair were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing NMES-assisted rehabilitation versus standard physical therapy alone. Pooled outcomes analyzed included quadriceps muscle strength and knee joint function (Lysholm scores). The meta-analysis revealed significant improvement in quadriceps muscle strength at both short-term (≤6 weeks) and long-term follow-ups with NMES compared to standard rehabilitation. These findings suggest that early initiation of NMES significantly enhances quadriceps strength recovery, highlighting NMES as beneficial adjunct therapy following ACL surgery.
