Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2025 01-Feb:. 10.1016/j.apmr.2024.06.008Study Summary
Twelve studies including 1541 patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing mobile health (mHealth) supported active exercise interventions versus exercise therapy without mHealth, and education without mHealth. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain intensity, functional disability, physical performance tests, adherence, and adverse events. mHealth-supported exercise showed no statistically significant improvement compared with exercise alone for pain or disability; however, mHealth combined with education demonstrated significant reductions in pain and disability. Overall, mHealth-supported interventions appear beneficial, particularly when combined with patient education, suggesting an accessible alternative to conventional rehabilitation for hip or knee OA.
