J Bodyw Mov Ther. 2025 01-Mar:. 10.1016/j.jbmt.2024.11.010Study Summary
Seven studies including 243 patients with isolated hip osteoarthritis (HOA) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing mixed physical exercise interventions versus no intervention and high-velocity resistance exercises versus low-velocity resistance exercises. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain intensity, functional mobility, and quality of life. Mixed exercise programs were not significantly superior to no intervention for short-term pain or quality of life, while low-velocity resistance exercise showed greater short-term pain improvement compared with high-velocity resistance exercise. Overall, evidence suggests limited but potentially beneficial effects of exercise, particularly low-intensity resistance exercise, though evidence quality is low.
