Clinicians should note that local mud application offers a safe, cost-effective supplementary treatment for pain relief and functional improvement in knee osteoarthritis. The results suggest its potential for integrating into conventional care. However, limitations such as small sample sizes, short follow-up periods, and variability in intervention protocols necessitate further high-quality studies to validate and generalize these findings.

This systematic review and meta-analysis included 10 randomized controlled trials involving 520 patients with knee osteoarthritis. It compared the effects of local mud application to control interventions, focusing on outcomes such as pain (assessed using the Visual Analog Scale, VAS) and functional status (evaluated using the WOMAC scale). Pooled results showed significant pain reduction and improved WOMAC scores in the mud therapy group. These findings suggest that local mud application is an effective supplementary intervention for pain relief and functional improvement in knee osteoarthritis, although further high-quality research is needed.
