Is progressive early digit mobilization intervention beneficial for patients with external fixation of distal radius fracture? A pilot randomized controlled trial

22 patients (over age 50) who had experienced a distal radius fracture and underwent fixation surgery were randomly assigned into one of two groups: either early digit mobilization or standard postoperative treatment. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of early digit mobilization on hand stiffness, function, and bone healing over the first 12 postoperative week. The results of the study indicated that recovery rates of thumb and finger workspaces between the two groups were statistically in favour of the early mobilization group at 12 weeks after injury. However, no statistical differences in finger dexterity, strength, and self-reported outcomes were found. Radiographic assessment also showed no difference between the groups for radial inclination/height and volar tilt at final follow up.
