The use of ayahuasca results in increased gamma coherence on EEG. This study only consisted of two patients, so larger studies are required to further these findings.
Study Summary
This case series of two participants partaking in two ayahuasca sessions to examine EEG correlates of ayahuasca experiences. EEG was taken before and during the effects of ayahuasca. It was found tat there were increases in global EEG coherence in the 36-44Hz and 50-64Hz frequency bands under the influence of ayahuasca in both subjects. There was also increased modal EEG alpha frequency and global power decreases across the cortex in most frequency bands.
