Education on Rotator Cuff-Related Shoulder Pain .
Education can reassure people with rotator cuff-related shoulder pain: a 3-arm, randomised, online experiment.
Pain . 2024 Apr 1;165(4):951-958.2237 patients with rotator cuff-related shoulder pain were randomized to receive either best practice education (n=724), best practice education plus pain science messages (n=738), or structure-focused education (n=775). The primary outcomes of interest were self-reported reassurance that no serious condition is causing their pain and that continuing with daily activities is safe. Secondary outcomes included intentions to stay active, see a health professional, see a specialist, and request diagnostic imaging, as well as the credibility and relevance of the education and similarity to previous education received. Outcomes were assessed immediately after the intervention. Overall, the results revealed that both best practice education and best practice education plus pain science messages significantly increased reassurance levels compared to structure-focused education, with best practice education plus pain science messages showing a slight additional effect. This suggests that best practice education is effective in increasing reassurance and may have immediate benefits for patient management strategies.
