2014 15th European Congress of Trauma & Emergency Surgery : Short term results of plate fixation versus intramedullary fixation for dislocated midshaft clavicle fractures: a randomized controlled trial

120 patients, between the ages of 18 and 65, with dislocated midshaft clavicle fractures, were randomly assigned into 1 of 2 groups to compare the effect intramedually nail fixation or plate fixation had on disability and complications. The short term results of the study indicated that patients in the plate fixation group experienced significantly better Constant-Murley score at 6 week follow up. No significant difference was demonstrated between groups when comparing DASH score, but a trend was indicated in favour of the plate fixation treatment (p=0.09). Patients were followed up for 1 year postoperatively, but final follow up results were not provided in this report, and thus it is uncertain if these findings were sustained in the long term.
