2014 15th European Congress of Trauma & Emergency Surgery : A comparison of interscalene block anaesthesia and general anaesthesia in patients with proximal humerus fracture

OE Journal. 2014;2(10):4350 patients suffering from a proximal humerus fracture of the shoulder were randomized to evaluate the efficacy of interscalene block anaesthesia (ISBA) against general anaesthesia (GA). Treatments were evaluated based on VAS pain, time needed to prepare anaesthesia, duration of operation, hemodynamic and respiratory stability, loss of blood during operation, use of analgesics postoperatively, and patient satisfaction. The evidence presented in this study demonstrated that ISBA resulted in superior VAS, analgesic use, and patient satisfaction scores. Time needed to perform anaesthesia was significantly longer in the ISBA compared to GA. Intraoperative complications and blood loss outcomes were comparable between groups.
