Dysphagia after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: a prospective study comparing two anterior surgical approaches

80 patients undergoing two-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) were randomized to reach anterior vertebra either through the medial edge of the omohyoid (MEO) or through the lateral edge of the omohyoid (LEO). Within the two groups patients were further randomized to have the surgery performed either at the C3-C4 level or the C6-C7 level, to compare the degree of dysphagia that arose in patients. Following assessments over 6 months, results indicated that when examining the level of surgeries individually, Swallowing-Quality of Life (SWAL-QOL) scores were significantly better in the LEO group at the C3-C4 level at 1 and 3 weeks, while scores were significantly better in the MEO group at the C6-C7 level at 1 and 3 weeks.
