Comparison between closed suction drainage and nondrainage in total knee arthroplasty: a meta-analysis
J Arthroplasty. 2011 Dec;26(8):1265-72. doi: 10.1016/j.arth.2011.02.005. Epub 2011 Mar 215 trials involving 1361 total knee arthroplasties (TKA) were identified to compare the clinical outcomes of closed suction drainage and nondrainage. Results revealed that closed suction drainage reduced the incidence of soft tissue ecchymosis and lowered the requirement for dressing reinforcement. However, closed section drainage was associated with an increase in the rate of homologous blood transfusion.
