Closed suction surgical wound drainage after hip fracture surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

This meta-analysis and systematic review identified 6 randomized trials that compared the use of closed suction drainage compared to no drainage in hip fracture surgery. A total of 664 patients were identified from these 6 studies. Results from the analysis indicated that there were no significant differences between drained and undrained wounds, in terms of wound infection, wound haematoma, re-operations for complications, and need for transfusion. As a result, uncertainty remained regarding the effectiveness of the use of drainage systems in hip fracture surgery.
