Proximally versus fully porous-coated femoral stems: a multicenter randomized trial
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2010 Feb;468(2):424-32.388 patients with degenerative disease of the hip, scheduled to undergo primary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA), were randomized to the femoral component of either a proximally or fully porous coated stem, with the acetabular component choice being at the discretion of the surgeon. At 2 year follow up, no clinically significant differences were found between two groups in clinical scores and incidence of thigh pain. The fully coated stem reportedly reduced the BMD in Gruen Zone 7 than the proximally coated stem.
