Comparing direct anterior approach versus posterior approach or lateral approach in total hip arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Eur J Orthop Surg Traumatol . 2023 Oct;33(7):2773-2792.19 randomized controlled trials (2010 patients) comparing direct anterior (DAA), posterior (PA), and lateral approach (LA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Outcomes of interest included Harris Hip Score (HHS), operative time, length of stay, incidence of neurapraxia, dislocation, periprosthetic fracture, and venous thromboembolism. HHS scores at 6 weeks and 12 weeks favored the PA and LA groups, respectively, compared to DAA. Operative time favored the PA group compared to DAA and mean length of stay favored DAA compared to PA. All other comparisons were similar between the two groups.
