Impact of Dextrose Injection Therapy for Chronic Anterior Talofibular Ligament Sprain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

27 patients with chronic anterior talofibular ligament sprains (without rupture) were randomized to receive a home-based physiotherapy program combined with either a single 15% dextrose injection or a normal saline injection into the affected ligament. The outcomes of interest include pain, function, ligament thickness, and range of motion. Results revealed, other than a greater pain pressure threshold at 12 weeks in favour of dextrose injection, no differences in all outcomes, at all timepoints up to 12 weeks. These findings indicate that adding dextrose therapy injections to a home-exercise program does not provide any clinical advantage over a placebo injection.
