Delay to TKA and Costs Associated with Knee Osteoarthritis Care Using Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid: Analysis of an Administrative Database

A retrospective analysis of a claims database aimed to compare intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (IA-HA) to other non-operative treatments in the ability to delay total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and reduce costs in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Patients were divided in two groups, those who have received IA-HA (n=181,631) and those who did not receive IA-HA (n=563,103). The analysis found that IA-HA delays the time to total knee arthroplasty, as well as having a lower cost per year for treatment in patients who progressed to TKA.
