Cost-effectiveness of manual therapy versus physiotherapy in patients with sub-acute and chronic neck pain: a randomised controlled trial

OE Journal. 2017;5(6):32 Eur Spine J. 2016 Jul;25(7):2087-96.181 patients with sub-acute or chronic neck pain were randomized to receive either manual therapy, according the Utrecht School guideline (MTU), or standard physiotherapy (PT). The purpose of this secondary analysis was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of MTU compared to PT. Cost differences were observed between groups, with significantly decreased intervention and healthcare costs but significantly higher unpaid productivity costs with MTU compared to PT. Overall, assessments of cost-effectiveness did not suggest that MTU was a markedly cost-effective alternative to PT.
