Concurrent popliteal block with an ankle block provides better post-operative analgesia .
The efficacy of combined popliteal and ankle blocks in forefoot surgery
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2008 Jul;90(7):1443-6.63 patients scheduled to undergo an elective osseous surgical procedure on the forefoot were randomized to have a combined ankle and popliteal block or an ankle block alone. Patients were followed-up for postoperative pain, satisfaction and additional analgesic requirement up to discharge. Postoperative assessments indicated that the concurrent popliteal block along with the ankle block was found to provide significantly better post-operative pain relief than the ankle block alone.
