Evaluation of a new spinal surgical robotic system of Kirschner wire placement for lumbar fusion: A multi-centre, randomised controlled clinical study

Fifty-six patients with lumbar stenosis scheduled for a lumbar fusion surgery were randomized to receive Kirschner wire placement performed with an automatic robotic system (n=27) or freehand (n=29). Outcomes of interest included deviation distance of the pedicle screw tip and point, deviation angle on the sagittal and coronal planes (via fluoroscopy and CT scan), surgical data (operative time, blood loss, length of stay, radiation exposure), and screw positioning outcomes. Results revealed significantly greater accuracy as measured by deviation distance and angle, but more blood loss in the robotic group compared to the freehand group.
