Comparing Autologous Blood, Corticosteroid, & A Combined Injection of Both For Lateral Epicondylitis .
Comparing autologous blood, corticosteroid, and a combined injection of both for treating lateral epicondylitis: a randomized clinical trial.
J Orthop Traumatol . 2024 Jul 4;25(1):34.One hundred and twenty patients with lateral epicondylitis were randomized to receive autologous blood injections (AB; n=40), corticosteroid injections (CS; n=40), or a combined injection of both (AB+CS; n=40). The primary outcome of interest was the improvement in the patient-rated tennis elbow evaluation (PRTEE) score. Secondary outcomes included changes in hand grip strength (HGS), functional improvement, and recurrence rates. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 15, 30, and 90 days post-treatment. Overall, the combined AB+CS group achieved the most significant and sustained improvement in PRTEE and HGS scores, with 97.4% achieving clinically significant improvement compared to 85% and 55% in the AB and CS groups, respectively. The results suggest that a combined AB+CS injection is more effective for rapid and sustained recovery than either treatment alone.
